MAMUN
Model United Nations is program that has been around for over fifty years in colleges and high schools around the world. The premise is this: Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and are provided with an agenda comprised of items also being debated by the real United Nations in New York. Students, acting as delegates, research the issues from the agenda and study their assigned nation's point-of-view in order to accurately represent the country. Upon arriving at a Model United Nations conference, delegates will meet in committee sessions to debate the issues from the agenda, draft resolutions, and ultimately arrive at the best solution the committee can devise. During a conference, delegates are challenged to persuade, influence, compromise, and ultimately make peace with friends and strangers while working within a structured process of debate. The MAGEC Trilogy...The Mid American Global Education Council proudly presents three
unique Model United Nations conferences each school year. Through
the use of simulations, we put students in the roles of our world's
decision makers as they tackle real world issues. As such, they get to
see world problems from points of view not normally available in
traditional classrooms. Mid American Model United Nations (MAMUN)This is the flagship of the MAGEC lineup. The Mid-American Model United Nations (MAMUN) is a 4-day simulation of the United Nations. At this event delegates will have the opportunity to represent UN countries in the General Assembly, ECOSOC, Security Council or International Court of Justice. There is no experience more diverse or rich in the Midwest than MAMUN. This event is held annually in Kalamazoo, Michigan sometime in late February or early March. Canadian American Security Councils and Summits (CASC)The CASC Summits will be held in Lansing, Michigan at the scenic Radisson Hotel. Attached the the Lansing Center this new location gives CASC the ability to be flexible and more creative. There are more food options and the Michigan Capitol is only a few feet away. Up to fifteen councils run simultaneously and
separately discuss the most pressing issues in today's world.
This event is held annually in Lansing, Michigan during the first weekend of December. Mid-American Historical Security Councils (MAHSC)During the Historical Security Council, delegates are taken back in time to debate issues already decided by the real Security Council. Delegates represent the countries that sat on the Security Council at the time of the original crisis. They have the opportunity to follow a path similar to the real delegations or to break new ground in trying to solve the problems. Delegates are expected to act according to the policies of those countries at that point in history. This event is held annually in Traverse City, Michigan during the last weekend of April.
How to get Involved...If your school is interested in attending one of our conferences, you should e-mail us at mamun@mamunonline.com in order to schedule a date for us to come and visit your club. We are always happy to do what we can to support a teacher who has taken the initiative to organize a Model United Nations program, and we enjoy the opportunity to welcome new students and advisors to the MAGEC family. © 2009 Mid-American Global Education Council PO Box 8411, Ann Arbor, MI 48107 (231) 758-2413 mamun@mamunonline.com |
