MAMUN
Model United Nations is program that has been around for over fifty years in colleges and high schools around the world. The premise is this: Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and are provided with an agenda comprised of items also being debated by the real United Nations in New York. Students, acting as delegates, research the issues from the agenda and study their assigned nation's point-of-view in order to accurately represent the country. Upon arriving at a Model United Nations conference, delegates will meet in committee sessions to debate the issues from the agenda, draft resolutions, and ultimately arrive at the best solution the committee can devise. During a conference, delegates are challenged to persuade, influence, compromise, and ultimately make peace with friends and strangers while working within a structured process of debate.
Awards at MAMUN...
Participating in MAMUN yields tremendous educational and personal rewards. Each delegate should rightly feel great pride in doing the research necessary to participate and in successfully playing the role of his/her nation during the debate. As a means of recognizing outstanding efforts in this area, the staff of MAMUN is pleased to present several awards at the conclusion of the conference. The following awards will be issued: OUTSTANDING DELEGATE IN COMMITTEETwo for each of the five GA Committees and each of the three ECOSOC Committees CRISIS SIMULATIONSOne for each of the Sessions SECURITY COUNCILOne or two at President’s discretion INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICETwo OUTSTANDING DELEGATION IN GENERAL ASSEMBLYTwo to four at staff’s discretion OUTSTANDING DELEGATION IN ECOSOCTwo to four at staff’s discretion JONATHAN PERRY AMBASSADOR AWARDOne BEST PREPARED SCHOOLUp to 3 Award CriteriaRecipients of awards in the above-referenced categories receive an engraved trophy. Additionally, Second Honors Certificates will be awarded to delegations and delegates who do not win one of the above awards yet demonstrate excellence in debate and preparation. These Second Honors Certificates are awarded at the chair’s discretion. The awards process is taken seriously at MAMUN. Awards are a recognition of the effort put forth by a delegate or delegation, but are not the only measure of delegates’ achievements. I. OUTSTANDING DELEGATEThe emphasis is on substance. Chair people and delegates will have equal votes in determining which delegate contributed most substantially to the debate. Delegates using procedure to define their participation will be considered less worthy for awards. Behind-the-scenes work in caucusing is another important award criteria. II. OUTSTANDING DELEGATION:Again, the emphasis is on substance. Delegations must demonstrate their basic knowledge of the issues in a short position paper and/or their assigned opening topic presentation. At MAMUN, delegations who actively work within the spirit and letter of the rules of procedure and Code of Conduct will be deemed eligible for an award. As with the Outstanding Delegate Award, staff and delegates will have input into the awards process. III. BEST PREPARED SCHOOL:This award seeks to recognize the efforts of entire schools in preparing their delegations. Pre-conference activities and evidence of preparedness at the conference, without regard to public speaking performances, will be the most important criteria. Position papers submitted prior to MAMUN will be evaluated and schools will be rated on the quality of those papers. Performance at the conference will then be used to determine our most outstanding schools. The award is designed in such a way that multiple schools could be honored at the highest level. It is not the intent of this award to produce a MAMUN “champion.” It is our intent, however, to honor those schools that make outstanding efforts both prior to and during the conference. IV. JONATHAN PERRY AMBASSADOR AWARD:This award recognizes the “true” ambassador: the person who unfailingly represents the more difficult viewpoints of his/her country, who extends courtesy to all delegates in all manner of debate, and who uses the diplomatic skills needed to take an unpopular position and defend it in a professional manner. The award recognizes those leadership skills in a delegate, thus promoting all that is good about Model United Nations. The award is named for former delegate Jonathan Perry whose life was filled with these qualities. While his sudden death saddened us all, we hope his spirit can live on through this annual award.
